Curves have a kind of magic, maybe even more so in our increasingly rectilinear world and can exert an exceptional force on us. Is there anything more beautiful than the shape of a body of a musical instrument like a tuba or cello? It’s the sumptuous curves of the body offset by the straight strings or the finger valves. Many of the best aesthetic and functional design solutions incorporate curves, and I think it’s the tension between linear and curved elements that makes them so successful. Take any bike, car, plane, bridge, shoe, or phone, and you’ll find a balance of straight lines and curves.
