Unintended Design

We are a marketing-driven consumer culture with aggressive visual messages coming at us at almost every turn. Much of what we see is artifice, cunning schemes to get us to buy things. But there are also a lot of compelling design stories that we can compose ourselves, stories that were never intended to be design, studies of color, pattern, contrasts, etc. that are refreshing humble and often astoundingly provocative. No one intended us to look at fire hoses or scaffolding or plumbing as design studies, giving us all the more reason to do just that.
