Arches are some of the most elegant forms man has ever created. As a naturally occurring support structure they have an inherent beauty. They both defy gravity and take our eye back to earth, containing both gravitas and levitas. The Alhambra in Granada has the most arches per square meter more than anyplace I have been, and it is worth a visit for the arches alone. Modern architects rarely employ arches, so we are especially grateful to the Saarinen’s and Kahn’s of the world.
